Knowledge and skills of ethnic minority midwives after training in two mountainous provinces in Vietnam
Author: Le Minh Thi, Doan Thi Thuy Duong and Bui Thi Thu Ha
Summary:
Maternal mortality is still high in the remote areas in Vietnam. Training for local ethnic minority midwives (EMMs), have been implemented as one way of reducing maternal and neonatal deaths. This study was conducted to assess knowledge and skills of EMMs after graduating midwifery training. Cross sectional study design was applied. Two hundred and four EMMs in two remote provinces were selected to participate in this study. EMMs were assessed their knowledge and performance after 1 year graduation. To assess EMM’s knowledge, EMMs answered the administration questionnaire and to assess thei skills, each EMM had to perform 3 tasks of antenatal counseling, intrapartum care (assist normal vaginal delivery and evaluation of cord and placenta), and postpartum care (neonatal resucitation) in prepared stimulated models. The results show that EMMs have good knowledge about prenatal, intra-partum and postnatal care. Their knowledge about prenatal care can be seen as the best as compared to these of intrapartum and postpartum care. Three fourth of EMMs can perform antenatal counselling with over 50% correct steps. Skills of EMMs were poor, especially skills on carintrapartum care and neonatal resuscitation. Over 80% EMMs missed step or perfrom incorrectly step in assisting normal vaginal delivery, and evaluation of cord and placenta. 100% EMMs could not perform neonatal resuscitation correctly. Poor working conditions and low subsidise affect the motivation of EMMs. Hand on re-training and improve working condtions for EMMs are recommended
