In Vietnam today, the unsanitary conditions of street food are prevalent and cause a serious threat to public health and social development. Street food vendors play an important role in ensuring food safety throughout the chain of production, processing, storage and preparation. The objective of this study was to describe the current status of food safety attitude and practice among food handlers. In 2015, a cross-sectional study was conducted among 80 street food vendors conveniently sampled in Vinh Tuy commune, Hai Ba Trung district, Hanoi. Assessing food safety attitude and practice of food handlers was based on the score of evaluating questions and sanitary practice checklists. General attitude of the street food vendors was good with overall 95% of the participants having good attitude towards food safety. However, there was only 62.5% of food handlers having good food safety practice. Particularly, there were 38.8% of the garbage bins having no lid and 21.3% of the participants used unhygienic food packing supplies to carry food for customers. Considering the current level of food safety attitude and practice among street food handlers, training programs are required to raise their awareness to improve practice in food sanitary conditions, especially in using hygienic garbage bins and safe food packing supplies.
