Association between FUT2 polymorphisms and norovirus GII.4 in fectionin Vietnam

FUT2 encodes an α1,2-fucosyltransferase that regulates the expression of the H antigen (an essential precursor of the A, B, and Lewis antigens) on the surface of the mucosa and in body fluids. Hence, it determines the secretor status of histo-blood group antigens (HBGAs). HBGA phenotypes and their secretory status are known to play an important role in the pathogenesis of several important pathogens, such as Streptococcus pneumoniae, Staphylococcus aureus, Vibrio cholerae, norovirus (NV), and rotavirus; they also play a role in the colonization of commensal microorganisms. FUT2 is highly polymorphic, with the prevalence of specific polymorphisms varying by ethnicity. In this study, we investigated the association between FUT2 polymorphism sand NV infection in 254 children from theThai Binh and Ha Nam provinces. The results showed that C357T polymorphism is the most prevalentce FUT2 SNP in Vietnam (accounting for 88.2% and 80.8% of alleles in Thai Binh and Ha Nam, respectively), followed by the A385T polymorphism (accounting for 50.0% and 54.9% of alleles in Thai Binh and Hanam, respectively). Polymorphisms at the 428, 571, 628, and 849 positions of FUT2 were rare, and the 685TGG deletion was not detected at all. Finally, we found anassociation between the homozygous FUT2 385Tgenotype and resistance to NV-GII.4 infection, which is the most common genotype worldwide. Thus, FUT2 polymorphisms are associated with NV infection in Vietnam
